Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and its fire service cousin Community Risk Reduction (CRR) have been successful in urbanized communities but what about rural areas? How about in Indian Country? This presentation will provide the audience with a deeper understanding of the history, political divisions, and historical trauma that affect Indian people and how those manifest both in times of crisis as well as when delivering preparedness programs. DRR/CRR in Indian Country can take many forms depending on the various needs, access to resources, and available personnel. From mission critical concerns about providing fire protection on reservation during wildfire season when many firefighters are deployed off reservation, to building relationships and partnerships in resource limited communities, and leveraging federal grants, including injury prevention grants, to meet the differing needs of the differing communities based on their differing circumstances.
