Alert and warning is a critical element in ensuring public safety during an emergency. The year 2025 brought many opportunities to test the City of Los Angeles' alerting plans, from fire to debris flows to protests to water outages. Throughout the year, the lessons learned from those alerting incidents led to a major revision of the City's alerting policy. This session will examine the changes and additions to the policy, including topics like improving language access, clarifying chains of alerting responsibility, sending alerts over jurisdictional borders, and incorporating mapped zones into emergency alerts. Using examples from the incidents that drove those changes, we'll discuss how to incorporate an alerting policy into your emergency communication plan, how to train people on that policy, and how to institutionalize alerting drills and increase the confidence of alert senders.
