Byron Piatt, MPA, EMT-I, CEM is the Director of Crisis Management and Preparedness (CMPD) for the University of New Mexico (UNM). In this role he supervises Threat Assessment, CARE for Faculty & Staff and Emergency Management. He is a Certified Emergency Manager through both the International Association of Emergency Managers, and the New Mexico Association of Emergency Management Professionals. He holds both a Master of Public Administration and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from UNM. He has worked for UNM for 23 years serving as the NM Bioterrorism Hospital Preparedness Program Coordinator (2004-2007), Emergency Manager (2007-2023) and Director of CMPD (2023-present). Byron serves as the Commander of the NM/TX Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) (2007-present) and was the Team Administrative Officer prior (1999-2007). He serves as adjunct faculty for UNM (2016-present) teaching Emergency Management and Preparedness, Sport Event Management and Triathlon. He also serves as training cadre for the State of New Mexico teaching FEMA courses.
