Harnessing the NWS National Centers: Advanced Tools for Weather Readiness

The National Weather Service transformation is creating new opportunities for emergency managers to leverage information from its national centers to aid decision-making. This session will feature experts from the Weather Prediction Center (WPC), Storm Prediction Center (SPC), and Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) to share their most useful tools and products for the emergency management community and explain how to use them.

WPC's Dr. Owen Shieh will cover decision support services for rain storms, winter storms, and extreme temperatures, including coordination with the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and products like the Excessive Rainfall Outlooks and Probabilistic Precipitation Portal.

SPC's Evan Bentley will detail recent enhancements to severe weather graphics, including new intensity information on tornadoes, hail, and wind. Scott Stearns will provide a preview of SPC's fire weather services, highlighting the 8-day Fire Weather Outlooks and advancements in forecasting critical wind, relative humidity, and dry thunderstorm threats.

SWPC's Shawn Dahl will address the growing threat of space weather and its potential impacts on technology and critical infrastructure. He will discuss activity to be aware of and considerations for response, especially when compounded with terrestrial weather emergencies.
