Owen Shieh

Warning Coordination Meteorologist
NWS Weather Prediction Center

Dr. Owen Shieh is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the NWS Weather Prediction Center in College Park, MD, where he provides national-level decision support for the emergency management and water resource community to mitigate the impacts of freshwater flooding, winter storms, and extreme temperatures for the protection of life and property and enhancement of the national economy. Dr. Shieh previously served as the Training Department Head at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and also led the nationwide development of FEMA-certified hazardous weather training courses at the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center. He also served as a Visiting Scientist/Professor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and has served on various planning committees for the American Meteorological Society. He holds a B.S. in Atmospheric Science from Cornell University, M.S. in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Hawaii. He still actively serves in the U.S. Navy Reserves as a Meteorology & Oceanography Officer assigned to Pacific Fleet Submarine Forces.
