Fire Warning Coordination Meteorologist

Scott Stearns is the inaugural Fire Warning Coordination Meteorologist (WCM) and new Fire Weather Program Lead with the Storm Prediction Center (SPC), located at the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). He brings several years experience as an Incident Meteorologist (IMET), having directly deployed to over two dozen large fires across the United States. A native of South Dakota, Scott's alma mater is the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. His expertise is uniquely informed by a 'boots-on-the-ground' background; prior to his tenure with the National Weather Service, he served as a Wildland and Structural Fire / EMS Lieutenant in a Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) area. His work focuses on improving decision support services and enhancing the precision of dry thunderstorm and critical wind & relative humidity forecasting to better protect life and property in volatile wildfire environments.
