This talk will recap what worked (and what did not work!) for a grant-supported schools recovery project in the British Virgin Islands. It might also convince EMs in rural or smaller agencies that partnering with multiple NGOs could be the spark plug needed to amplify their impact.
Learn how a Territorial emergency management agency helped 13 public schools transition out of survival mode and into hubs of resiliency in their villages and communities. Working together, the BVI Department of Disaster Management, the Ministry of Education, the territory's community college, the local Red Cross, and a non-profit organization dedicated to climate change adaptation: - Provided orientation on the project concept for representatives of all K-12 schools - Conducted campus assessments at 14 schools - Delivered targeted training for staff at 14 schools and hundreds of students - Revised campus specific emergency plans - Revitalized or established gardens at 13 schools - Established recycling systems at 14 schools, and MORE!
But we were only able to pull it off by stepping out of our silos, away from our egos, and really collaborating with each other; and with the administrators, teachers and students we were trying to help.
